The golden hour, which occurs just after sunrise, provides soft, warm lighting that enhances the natural beauty of the landscape and wildlife. The light is less harsh, resulting in well-balanced photographs with beautiful, natural shadows.

Seasonal Considerations: While the reserve is open year-round, the cooler months from October to April are ideal for visiting. During these months, the weather is more comfortable, and the wildlife is more active, providing ample opportunities for capturing dynamic shots.

• DSLR/Mirrorless Camera: A camera with interchangeable lenses will give you the flexibility to switch between different focal lengths.

• Reptiles and Amphibians: Alligators are a common sight, especially along the marshes. You may also encounter turtles, frogs, and snakes. The alligator trail will almost always have at least 1 or 2 (if you are lucky even more) alligators.

Parking: There is a free parking lot at the reserve’s entrance. It can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early ensures you get a spot.

Restrooms: Porta Potties are available near the parking area. I would advise you to bring sanitary wipes and hand sanitizer as the facilities were not always the cleanest. There are no restrooms along the trails, so it’s wise to use the facilities before heading out.

Trails: The reserve features several well-marked trails. Some popular ones include:

• Alligator Alley: Known for its alligator sightings and bird activity.
• Shady Oak Trail: Offers a mix of shaded areas and open marshes, ideal for diverse shots.
• Heron Hideout Trail: Provides excellent birdwatching opportunities.

• Stay on the Trails: Venturing off-trail can be dangerous and disturb the wildlife.
